Scouting for Food Update

posted Oct 25, 2016, 10:01 PM by Lynn Hamilton

Scouting for Food is an annual food collection orchestrated by Scouts from National Capital Area Council. Local Scouts distribute plastic bags to homes across the region and return to pick up the bags, now filled with food, one week later. Collected food is distributed to needy families throughout the communities of the Council.

Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venturing crews and Sea Scout ships throughout the Council will be distributing Scouting for Food donation bags in local neighborhoods. They return to collect those bags one week later.

This is the one Service Project that we perform on a District Level.  This year, Seneca District has a goal of 35,000 pounds of food that we are trying to collect for Poolesville Food Bank, Germantown Help, Gaithersburg Help and The Manna Food Bank.

Several folks have asked about "assigned" areas.  Seneca district does not "assign" units to an area.  Units select their own areas.  The map on our district Scouting For Food page (http://www.ncacsenecadistrict.org/program/scouting-for-food) will show where units have said that they distribute bags and collect them from.  Please contact Phil with any necessary changes.

Some units associated with churches pick up food separately for their church or other local food bank.  Even if you do not need bags for this and you do not collect during our Scouting For Food effort, PLEASE REPORT WHAT YOU DO COLLECT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR!.  These totals may be added to our annual effort.

Our district has been allotted 34,000 pre-printed bags.  We still have around 10,000 bags that have not been picked up.  According to the list that leaders filled out when they picked up bags at the October Round Table, it seems like the following units picked up bags last year but have not picked them up this year:

Pack 110

Pack 318

Pack 618

Pack 694

Pack 1094

Pack 1307

Troop 318

Troop 489

Troop 1094

Troop 1097

Troop 1220

Troop 1315

In addition, the following units have not picked up bags in the last year or two.  It is possible that we may have missed one or two in error and we know that some units pair up together to work on this effort
