Chemistry for Scouts

Chemistry for Scouts event is a hands-on opportunity for Boy and Girl Scouts to earn chemistry-related merit badges. Local Girl Scout, Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops and individual Scouts are invited to Montgomery College’s Rockville campus to participate in activities in the Chemistry Department’s teaching laboratories.  Scouts will work on laboratory activities to earn chemistry-related badges in a safe, educational environment.  Chemistry faculty will design and set up activities aligned with merit badge requirements.  Volunteer faculty, undergraduate chemistry students and member volunteers from our partner, the Chemical Society of Washington, will serve as content experts to help guide Scouts through the completion of merit badge requirements. Specific activities will align with requirements from the following Scout merit badges:

Cub Scouts: Bear Scouts Super Science Elective; Webelos Scouts – Adventures in Science Elective

Boy Scouts: Merit Badges for 1)Chemistry and  2)Nuclear Science

Girl Scouts: All Levels American Chemical Society Chemistry Activity Badge; Brownies Home Scientist Badge; and Seniors – Science of Style Badge

The event also will offer an opportunity for Scout participants and adult chaperones to tour the Chemistry Department’s academic teaching laboratories where our undergraduate students have access to modern scientific instrumentation and equipment.
